Kauhale Preservation Area Wetland Stewardship Program

E kokua mai kakou i na manu waiwai! Volunteers are needed to help prepare the Kauhale Wetlands for the 2016 nesting season.

Let's pull together to help the treasured birds of the Hoakalei-Kauhale preservation area and wetland. The annual stewardship program is scheduled for February 6, 2016 from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. This important community project prepares the protected wetland for the nesting season of the threatened kukulu ae‘o (Hawaiian Stilt), and also improves the habitat for other endangered native Hawaiian waterfowl, like the ‘Alae ke‘oke‘o (Hawaiian Coot), the Hunakai (Sanderling), and the Koloa (Hawaiian Duck)

For safety and planning purposes, registration for this stewardship activity is required. The deadline for registration is January 27, 2016. You may email kupuna@hoakaleifoundation.org or call 808.689.9613.

It would be helpful if volunteers bring a hoe, a rake, gloves, a pick, and wear good covered shoes to walk in the mud. Also come prepared to have fun, get muddy, and enjoy refreshments after the work is completed.
